More than one individual to rent the same unit

Uptown Storage - Joseph Lefcoski

We have been allowing more than one individual to rent the same unit and store their items in it. Does each individual need to be on the lease and/or is this a practice that we should discontinue? We only offer this to college students over the summer but have found out that this arrangement is potentially troublesome. Suggestions?

While I understand you wanting to accommodate the students needs there should only be 1 person on the lease and responsible for the unit. If they would like to allow their friends to put their belongings in the unit and contribute to the rent that is their decision. The tenant would need to give the other students access including the gate code and keys. The manager should never give this info. to anyone but the 1 person on the lease. With how you are doing it now what happens if the rent is not paid? Do you deny access to all parties? Also, there is a potential of you opening yourself up to legal issues if theft occurs.
In my opinion I would not do this anymore. You can call or email me if you would like to discuss further. 678-896-5049
